What is the best age to spay or neuter a kitten?

Ideally, kittens should be spayed/neutered before they reach 5-months-old. The procedures can be safely performed as early as 6-weeks-old, depending on the patient.

How do female cats change after being spayed?

A common misconception is that cats will gain weight and become lazy after being spayed. This is simply untrue. Once their initial fatigue and decreased appetite from the surgery wears off, they will go back to being their normal selves. Spaying your cat has many positive health effects including longer life expectancy, eliminated risk of ovarian and uterine cancer, as well as reduced risk of infections and mammary cancer. Spayed cats will also no longer roam or perform cat calls to seek male partners, and are less likely to develop aggressive behaviours.

How do male cats change after being neutered?

Neutered cats, like their female counterparts, will benefit from increased life expectancy and an eliminated or reduced risk for various illnesses. Removing their reproductive organs also causes their testosterone levels to decrease. This means they will have lower chances of displaying aggressive actions like roaming, spraying and fighting now and well into their adult years.

What can I expect after my cat is spayed/neutered?

In the immediate hours and days after your cat’s surgery, expect them to have lower energy levels and appetite. It’s important to follow all of the post-op instructions provided by the vet. For example, they should not bathe or be submerged in water for about 2 weeks after their operation. It is also best not to lift your cat or pick them up in the days after their surgery.
