Euthanasia

A humane option for cats in their final stage of life performed with the utmost compassion.

No amount of preparation can get you ready for saying goodbye to your furry family member. Here at Pacific Cat Clinic, we are pet parents just like you. We have also gone through the painful experience of watching our pets cross over the rainbow bridge. When the time comes, euthanasia is the most humane option available. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at 250-475-2287 to start the conversation.

How do I know if my cat should be euthanized?

Our goal as your cat’s healthcare providers is to ensure they live as healthy as possible, for as long as possible. When treatments and medications can no longer relieve them of their pain, or if their quality of life has decreased so much so that they can no longer eat, breathe or move without extensive medical assistance, then it may be time to consider euthanasia.

Can I be with my cat while they are being euthanized?

Absolutely. We have a private area specifically designed for this procedure. You and your loved ones will have all the time you need to say your goodbyes. We suggest bringing with you your cat’s favourite items to give them added comfort. As a Fear Free Certified practice, our staff are also trained on special stress-reducing techniques for our patients, so you can rest assured your cat will be in compassionate and capable hands.

Do cats know when they are being euthanized?

It is common for cats who are terminally ill to stay in their beds or comfortable areas of their home. Many interpret this as a signal they are preparing to permanently rest and close their eyes. That being said, there is no concrete evidence to suggest cats know they are dying, or, in particular that they are being euthanized. The entire process is 100% pain-free. After the drug is administered, your pet will fall into a peaceful sleep. Once unconscious, the drug will cause their organs to fail one by one.
