Non-invasive diagnostic tools used to discover anomalies and provide personalized medical care.
No matter how close our bonds are with our feline friends, they cannot tell us exactly how they are feeling. Visual exams, urine/fecal testing and bloodwork are also not applicable to certain injuries or conditions. This is when ultrasounds and X-rays come into play. They help us look inside and analyse your cat’s internal organs. Call us at 250-475-2287 to learn more about these non-invasive tools.
Yes, both are non-invasive procedures that will cause no pain to your cat. Here at Pacific Cat, we have digital X-rays that use minuscule amounts of radiation. That being said, we still make sure patients and technicians wear protective gear throughout the scan. Ultrasounds use sonic waves that are 100% safe. The ultrasound gel applied on the patient’s skin to help the device glide smoothly is also non-irritant.
NOTE: Please let us know if your cat has anxiety. In this case (or if they have to be placed in an uncomfortable position to scan certain areas of the body) we may sedate them to prevent unnecessary stress. Our staff is also Fear Free certified, so we can make the necessary accommodations for even the most nervous cats.
If your cat is pregnant, ultrasounds are typically used during their checkups. They will also be ordered by the vet when diagnosing certain illnesses, and if your cat has unexplained symptoms such as weight loss, diarrhea and stomach pain.
X-rays are used to get a closer look and analysis of your cat’s bones, joints, body cavities and any foreign objects. They are usually the first type of imaging a vet would request when a cat is injured or has swallowed items they should not have – this happens more often than you might think!
